Francis Sendker Obituary

Francis T. Sendker, of Lake Worth, Florida, formerly of Sandwich, MA and West Roxbury, MA, passed away on December 20, 2013 after a brief illness.  Predeceased in July 2013, by his bride of 67 years, Yvette C. (Deniau) Sendker.   He was 94 years old.

"Bob" as he was known to his family and friends, was a veteran of World War II, serving in 5 campaigns with Patton's 3rd Army at Utah Beach in Normandy, France, the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), the Rhineland and Central Europe, where his unit met up with the Russian Army in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia on V-E Day.  Within days they were on their way to the Philippines to prepare for the invasion of Japan, and was there on V-J Day when the war ended.

Following his service in the Army, he returned to Buffalo, NY, his hometown , and worked in construction prior to attending Syracuse University College of Engineering where he received his civil engineering degree in 1955.  Bob had an extensive and rewarding career in the Portland cement industry over 30 years. He was with the Alpha Portland Cement Company of Easton, PA, where he rose to the position of Eastern Regional Manager, and the Northeast Cement Company, a division of LaFarge Corporation.  He was their Regional Manager when he retired in 1984.

Bob was a life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and a past president of the Massachusetts Section of Civil Engineers.  He was also a past president of the New England Chapter of the American Concrete Institute and served on several technical committees at the national and international level.  Bob was the "Chevalier" of the Legion of Honor of France.

He did extensive research on vacuum de-watering of concrete in Europe and the U.S. and was a charter member of the International Vacuum Concrete Institute.  He lectured on quality concrete methods at professional society meetings throughout his career.  Bob was a member of American Legion Post 0258, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a life member of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge.

He leaves his son Alan and wife Fredda Sendker of Foxboro, MA, his granddaughter Rebecca and husband Jonathan Selkowe of NYC, and great granddaughter Nicole.  A special mass will be held on Monday at 10 at Our Lady of Sorrows in Sharon with burial at St. Joseph's Cemetery in West Roxbury, MA.  Wake will be held on Sunday from 4-8 at the Alexander F. Thomas & Sons Funeral Home, 45 Common St., Walpole, MA  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to htt://www.woundedwarriorproject.org
